Elections, polls open in Viareggio and Versilia: 119 thousand voters voting

Viareggio, 8 June 2024 – It’s now arrived, after the countdown, the first of the two days of European elections in which the citizens, called to the polls, will elect the members of the European Parliament (Italy elects 76 of the 720 deputies to the European Chamber), concurrently, but only in Stazzema, the mayor and the city council will also be elected.

There are 119 thousand voters who have the right to vote, among Viareggio and the Versilia: 50772 in Viareggio, 27750 in Camaiore, 5885 in Forte dei Marmi, 20352 in Pietrasanta, 10951 in Seravezza and 3290 in Stazzema. For everyone, and in all Municipalities, the polls will be open today from 3pm to 11pm today, and tomorrow (9 June) from 7am to 11pm, when counting will begin.

To be able to vote, every adult citizen will be able to go to the polling station where they are registered, indicated on the electoral card, equipped with a valid identification document (identity card, passport or driving license) and, indeed, the electoral card, checking that they still have spaces available for stamping. Furthermore, for the first time, non-resident students who have requested by May 5th will also be able to vote, voting where they are domiciled rather than in the municipality of residence.

Voting in the European elections uses a proportional system with preferential voting and it will therefore be possible, as regards the voting method, by tracing a mark on the chosen symbol, express, in the appropriate lines, the names of the preferred candidates, up to three within the same list, voting, in the case of two or three preferences, for candidates of different genders. The vote will therefore be valid only in the following cases: by ticking on the list, expressing a single preference, expressing two gender preferences (a man and a woman) or expressing three gender preferences (two men and a woman or two women and a man) . If no preferences are indicated, the vote will not go by default to the list leader indicated by the party, but to the list. The so-called “disjoint vote”, i.e. making a cross on one list and voting for candidates belonging to another, will not be considered valid, under penalty of cancellation of the ballot.

For the purposes of electing Italian members of the European Parliament, the lists must have obtained at least 4% of the valid votes cast at national level.
