ROVIGO – The electoral campaign which lasted not just a month, but for all, ends today candidates much more, even if the one who left first was the outgoing mayor, Edoardo Gaffeowho already the day after his resignation, February 15, was working on his re-nomination which sees him at the head of a coalition made up of the Civica Rovigo, Citizens’ Forum and 5 Star Movement lists.
For the others it was a little less long, because it required negotiations, verification of names, meetings and the need to find an agreement. Thus between March and April the races of Antonio Rossini, from an area more inclined to the centre-right, were added, making his debut in this role after two mandates (both of which ended before the natural expiry) on the opposition benches, supported by two civic lists (We for Rovigo and the Alliance of Moderates), and of Federico Frigato who, after having also been a councilor in the Merchiori council (centre-left, 2006-2011), had attempted to become its heir, but was used by Bruno Piva’s centre-right in the run-off ( fall fell in 214). Having then left politics in 2015, he surprisingly returns with the list of that time, Rovigo is loved, this time transversal given the presence of councilor candidates from opposite areas. Then the centre-right closed the negotiation and chose Valeria Cittadin (supported by Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, Lega, the civic on behalf of the candidate and Azione), but this meant that Ezio Conchi, one of the names that was in dance, is back on the field as in 2019 with his Cambia Rovigo. Last came Palmiro Franco Tosini, who broke the deadlock by saying he was ready to run with his Democratic and inclusive list, thus shaking up the uncertainties of the Democratic Party which supports him.
THE OCCASION
Six candidates instead of the seven of five years ago, but still a fragmentation equally divided between the two political areas, which makes one think more probable ballot. And in this round for the renewal of Palazzo Nodari there is also an anniversary, because not only the change in the duration of the mandate from four to five years (which occurred in 2001), but also the closures precede the announcements of three administrations (the second of Fabio Baratella from 1998 to 2000, then that of Piva from 2011 to 2014 and then that of Massimo Bergamin from 2015 to 2019), have meant that the thirtieth anniversary of the electoral reform is celebrated. Because it was in 1994 that the new law led to the direct election of the mayor and then it was Baratella, from the centre-left, who won against Paolo Bellini from the centre-right.
VISIT
The city, meanwhile, is experiencing the last electoral fires and if, as we write alongside, today is a day of final celebrations, yesterday the Honorable Member stopped by for a meeting Alessandro Zan, candidate for the European elections for the Democratic Party, in support of Tosini. Appointment in which it was said that we are going to “a vote for the rights of all, fundamental in the face of an increasingly discriminatory drift, albeit in disguise, disguised with respectability and arguments that speak to the belly of those who are dissatisfied and in difficulty , but they have no foundation. A drift that risks taking us to the edge of the precipice.” The deputy, it will be remembered, had presented the law decree against homotransphobia in 2021 “and scuttled in Parliament by the right”, but which did not find total support even in his party, 5 Stars and Italia viva.
«The right and the center-right in general – said Zan, who paid homage to the tomb of Giacomo Matteotti in Fratta – are trying to corner those who, in their opinion, are different, outlining the portrait of a traditional family as an ideal model . But it is a model to which they are not the first to adapt and which they do not pursue. This is not what we want, we must not have our priorities and agenda imposed on us by a sovereignist right.”
