Snow clearing on the Timmelsjoch-Passo del Rombo Alpine Road is proving particularly difficult this year. A higher-than-average amount of snow in winter and spring, as well as repeated snowfalls in recent days, are causing problems for clearing teams. The Alpine crossing opens no earlier than the beginning of June
The amount of snow is enormous: on the South Tyrolean side alone, around 300,000 cubic meters of snow have to be removed from the layered road to reach the Timmelsjoch-Passo del Rombo at 2,474 meters above sea level. On the South Tyrolean side, conditions are even more challenging. «The danger of avalanches is particularly high due to the slope and the weather conditions often force our colleagues to stop», says Manfred Tschopfer.
In light of these challenges, the Board of Directors of Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße AG expects the road to be opened by the beginning of June at the earliest. Timmelsjoch- Passo del Rombo, also known as the “gem” among the Alpine passes, connects the Austrian Ötztal with the Val Passeiertal.
Located at 2,474 meters above sea level, the Strada Alpina offers breathtaking views and is a popular destination for motorcyclists and motorists. However, the route is only passable in the summer months, as it remains closed in winter due to extreme snowfall.
