He attempted to illegally smuggle Ghanaian plants out of the port of Livorno: caught and fined

Livorno, 25 May 2024 – He was trying to irregularly bring out important plants from abroad from the port of Livorno. But the financial police intervened promptly and sanctioned the man. As part of the daily checks, the soldiers of the Livorno group identified a container containing some plants subject to protection from Ghana, which had practically already unduly left the Labronica port without the required documents having been presented, specifically the request for intervention and the import notification. The military therefore stopped the load, investigated the situation and then fined the person responsible, who now risks between 3 thousand and 15 thousand euros.

The port of Livorno is increasingly a strategic infrastructure at a national and international level. For this reason the activity of Financial Police continues unabated, to stamp out illicit trafficking and violations of many types: from anti-drug to tax-customs controls right up to environmental protection, by virtue of the convention on international trade of endangered species.

Since 2016, specific functions and responsibilities have been attributed to the Finance Department for checks at ports and airports regarding illegal trade in endangered flora and fauna protected by the convention to which 183 states adhere. Objective: to ensure sustainable international trade in flora and fauna, particularly those at risk of extinction.

Since the beginning of the year, several dozen checks have already been carried out in the Labronico port, most of which fortunately concluded positively.
