Not a rally, but a one against all. On the stage of the Acacia theater, in Naples, Giuseppe Conte the electoral tour in Campania ends. And launches broadsides everywhere, from Meloni government to former friends of the Democratic Party. “I have to remove a little stoneor – he says -, we brought in 209 billion of the Pnrr, while they (the government, ed.) are minus 13 billion”. The cry of alarm, in fact, is “we have returned to the old austerity, we will have blood and tear cuts to healthcare, education and employment policies”. The estimate of the ax is precisely 13 billion euros.

The leader of the M5S is alone on the scene, as in a theatrical monologue. The location also lends itself. But he reserves the heaviest blows for (for now) former Democratic allies. “Lastly, I appointed Gentiloni, European Commissioner – explains -, he was capable of making a shameful attack on us in the middle of the electoral campaign”. The man from the Democratic Party in the EU commission touched on the Pnrr, totem of the five-star narrative. As a former prime minister, Conte claims it as an achievement, even a personal one. Gentiloni instead “he said – says the president of the 5 Star Movement – that the only merit goes to an algorithm, some Eurobureaucrat would have built this Pnrr Nex Generation, and our battle would not have happened”.

Conte appears furious. “Let’s not beat around the bush, it was a cowardly attack. He did all the right-wing forces, Meloni and his companions a favor.”. And in a crescendo of anger: “But you can’t imagine how shameful and cowardly one becomes during an election campaign.”. You also have feelings for Schlein (“I’m sorry that the PD leaders didn’t distance themselves.”).

Then comes the stage artifice. Old statements are projected behind Conte, complete with quotation marks. On July 23, 2020, Gentiloni underlined that “the government has moved well”. Even more praise from Calenda, Renzi and Meloni. For the final blow, Conte plays the feelings card. “There is no longer a person, a member of the Democratic Party who had a high human and political depth”. What if “If he had been there today, he would have intervened and spoken clearly”. The late David Sassoli appears on the screen on video, when he was president of the European Parliament. He compliments Conte on the Pnrr match. Applause erupted in the room, the impressive number was a success.
