“Beaches Brew” in Marina di Ravenna. All the surprises of the festival

Marina di Ravenna confirms itself as the capital of experimentation and research into sounds from all over the world, with the eleventh edition of “Beaches Brew”a festival that offers from 4 to 6 June a real kaleidoscope of 18 artists from 11 different countries: Niger, Pakistan, Cuba, Kenya, United States, Canada, Switzerland, Ghana, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, as well as obviously Italy. The appointment is, as usual, on the beach facing the sea and under the Hana-Bi canopy.

«Ours is now a to all intents and purposes ’boutique festival’ which has established itself over the years – says Christopher Angiolini, creator and artistic director –. In synergy with the Bronson Produzioni team, the curator staff divided between the Netherlands and the United States has always carried out scouting work for emerging artists, new trends and original paths capable of combining tradition and modernity. If many of the names we propose may seem unfamiliar to non-experts, over time many of them have become global phenomena.” On its stage they performed, often for the first time in Italy, King Gizzard, Courtney Burnett, Big Thief, Khruangbin, Comet is Coming, Neutral Milk Hotel, Ty Segall, The War on Drugs and Elijah Wood.

This year every eveningstarting at 7.30 pm, will have a different sound declination, a ‘vibe’ or rather a vibration, as it is fashionable now to say, to be discovered. Tuesday 4 June will be dedicated to blues, the sound of North African guitars meeting European arrangements; on Wednesday 5th, however, the sounds are more Western and post-funk while on Thursday 6th there will be space for hip hop and electronics.

Artists to discover

Among the most anticipated guests there is certainly the Pakistani maestro Ustad Noor Bakhsh who became a celebrity at the ripe old age of 78. His story is incredible, told by “The Guardian”: he has always played the Benju, a keyboard zither typical of Baluchistan, almost in solitude, until an anthropologist found it and valorized it. With the money he earned from the release of his first album ‘Jungul’ with the British Hive Mind Records, he bought a water tank to build a bathroom and kitchen in his house in Pakistan.

Other artists to discover? The Special Interests grew up in the social centers of New Orleans, Louisiana. Their glam sound ‘No Wave’ will be counterpointed by blues rock contaminated with the rhythms of Nigerian African blues music Etran De L’Aïr. Also worth discovering is the sharp punk of the English women Lambrini Girlsthe ghettotech of Detroit HiTechthe surprising English quartet Universitythe collective’s enthralling New Wave Disco Baby’s Berserkthe explosive pop from the Kenyan Kabeaushethe electronic beat of IchBinBobthe incendiary electro-dance of RYF., the Cuban selector Cami Layé Okun, Atlantic Cement And DJ Fitz for engaging DJ sets.

There will also be room for Nyege Nyegea collective founded eleven years ago in Uganda to support the music of African artists who will present the hip hop beat producer Aunty Rayzor and the multifaceted artist Bit who debuts with the album “Cociage”. The musical program will be enriched by a moment of in-depth analysis and networking dedicated to the issues that animate the world of international music: “Against the Stream: how music streaming platforms have changed the music industry”. Free and free entry to all events.
