The memory of those who were in an ideal relay with the new generations who now have the burden of keeping alive the moral rigor of those who opposed the mafia, even in the years when it seemed invincible.

This is the meaning of the initiative organized by the Marsala subsection of the ANM on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the Capaci massacre, in which Cosa Nostra brutally killed judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife (and magistrate Francesca Morvillo) and the escort agents Rocco Dicillo, Antonio Montinaro and Vito Schifani.

After an initial prologue at the cutting of the Falcone tree, in the open space in front of the Palace of Justice, during which the president of the Anm subsection Maria Milia underlined the value of memory, the participants moved inside the Court, to the the “Borsellino” hall, where the president Alessandra Camassa spoke, recalling how Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino not only changed the history of Italy and Sicily, but also of the judiciary, giving a precious technical contribution to the investigations on organized crime. This was followed by speeches by the president of the Bar Association, Giuseppe Spada, by the administrative director of the Court of Marsala, Fabio Maiani, by the councilor Francesco Marchese (representing the Municipality of Marsala), by the secretary of the ANM Massimiliano Alagna and by the prosecutor Fernando Asaro, who presented Giovanni Paparcuri as a direct witness of the “civil war” that was fought between Cosa Nostra and the State between the 80s and 90s.

With a very touching testimony, Paparcuri – who miraculously escaped the attack in which judge Rocco Chinnici was killed – reconstructed the main stages of his professional life, marked by collaboration with the magistrates of the Palermo pool (Chinnici himself, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino). Several anecdotes were told, between the smile – for certain memories of everyday working life – and the emotion for the tragic epilogue that befell the three judges, but also Beppe Montana and Ninni Cassarà, leading protagonists in the fight against the mafia. After listening to the readings and admiring the works presented by the delegations of the Marsala high schools that participated in the initiative, Paparcuri concluded by claiming the privilege of having worked alongside so many extraordinary servants of the State, inviting the students to do their part so as not to make their sacrifice in vain.
