Cremona Evening – Lombardy agriculture suffers from bad weather: in the Cremona area the hay remains in flooded fields while scheduled sowing is canceled. The heavy bulletin of Coldiretti Lombardia

The bad weather that hit Lombardy in recent days has inevitably caused a long series of damage to the entire agricultural sector. The Coldiretti Lombardia bulletin does not spare any province: from Mantua to Lodi, from Pavia to Bergamo and Brescia, between torrential rains and local hailstorms, the situation is monitored by Coldiretti Lombardia technicians working in the area. Melons, watermelons, pumpkins, but also apricots, corn, barley and wheat ruined by hail, while hay rots in waterlogged fields. The lands are now expanses of mud that are impossible to work. The crops in the field are compromised, while the scheduled sowings have all been cancelled. This is the distressing photograph returned by the Coldiretti technicians engaged in checks on the territories.

“In the province of Cremona – states Coldiretti – the first hay ready for harvest is rotting in the field due to excessive rain. A situation that worries farmers, because the fodder serves as food for the cows. The corn should also be sent to the stables: the sowing, where it has been carried out, now needs to be done again.”

All this is added to the damage and critical issues already reported in recent days throughout the regional territory, with the result that sowing is now haywire, tomato transplants are blocked, barley and wheat are in danger of asphyxiation and in general the plants are more fragile in the face of attacks by fungi and parasites.

“Agriculture – concludes Coldiretti – it is the economic activity that more than any other experiences the consequences of climate change on a daily basis with the damage caused by drought and bad weather which in Italy in 2023 exceeded 6 billion euros”.
