Stella David on teacher’s doorinvestigations underway by the Digos of the Florence Police Headquarters into the engraving of a Star of David accompanied by a threatening writing on the door of the room of a professor of the Department of Legal Sciences of theUniversity of Florence.

The engraving was discovered and made known by the University “on the door of a teacher’s room, the engraving of a Star of David accompanied by a threatening writing”.

The University writes on its website: “The episode, reported to the competent authorities, arouses deep indignation. The entire Department of Legal Sciences and School of Law community condemns the very serious act which takes us back to the darkest years of recent European history and warns us of the need to firmly monitor every regurgitation of anti-Semitism. It is not acceptable that the international situation is used as a pretext to fuel demonstrations of this type. The Department and the School are committed to intensifying their presence and activities in promoting one culture of coexistence respectful of the values of democratic pluralism”.

Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence: “What happened to a professor at the law faculty of Florence is a very serious episode which denotes a growing climate of hatred. I was deeply impressed: I know that faculty well, it is where I studied and where I taught for some years. I express maximum solidarity with the teacher and the University of Florence. I hope that those responsible will be identified soon.”

Eike Schmidt, candidate for mayor center-right administrative 2024 Florence: “Theanti-Semitism cannot and must not find citizenship in Florence. He is even more disdainful that the act was committed at the University, a place of cultural and human education. I strongly condemn the gesture and repudiate it together with every form of discrimination and hatred.”

Will be Funaro, candidate for mayor center-left administrative 2024 Florence: “I express solidarity with the entire community of the Department of Legal Sciences and the School of Law. This serious episode takes us back over the years, to the darkest pages of our history. Florence, gold medal for military valor for the Resistance, is against all forms of hatred and repudiates anti-Semitism“.

The Florentine association Friends of Israel with Kishore Bombaci, president, “she says she is outraged by the latest episode in chronological order which concerns our city and which now denotes rampant anti-Semitism. The vile attack on the teacher of the Faculty of Law takes us back to years that seemed archived and confirms the danger of climate that has been felt in the city since last October 7th on. We want to demonstrate our total solidarity with the victim and at the same time urge the institutions to finally take a clear position against anti-Semitism without succumbing to disturbing electoral logic.

When we cry on Remembrance Day we should remember that that “never again” is today. And today like yesterday, those who remain silent are complicit.

We also believe that the protests staged by students here in Florence too are going beyond the boundaries of freedom of thought and risk lending themselves to dangerous exploitation by some madman who is evidently raising the bar.

The Florentine friends of Israel association is very worried not only about this climate but also about the underestimation that accompanies this climate.

We therefore invite you to remain vigilant and not let darkness fall on this yet another unacceptable episode also asking Unifi to take a more decisive stance against anti-Semitism also making ourselves available for a meeting to discuss the topic and make constructive proposals”
