How can a band named after a ninth-century mystic reach the top five in the space of a year with two singles, the second of which is in Sanskrit? To get the answer you would have to ask the Kula Shakers, because they are the ones we are talking about. It was 1996, the record in question was their first album, Kand the songs Hey Dude And Tattva.

Almost thirty years after that debut, Kula Shaker are ready to present their seventh studio album to the public at the Ravenna Festival, Natural Magick, and they will do it on Saturday 29 June at the Pavaglione in Lugo (appointment at 9.30pm). «This chapter in the life of the band is strongly driven by the energy that is created at our concerts and by the connection that is established with the audience”, so their leader Crispian Mills. «It’s very similar to the way we recorded Kwhen we only had half an hour to amaze people and we recorded most of the album on tour between one show and another.”

Introspective, but at the same time eclectic and experimental, the Mills & Co. band (Jay Darlington on Hammond organ and keyboards, Alonza Bevan on bass and Paul Winter-Hart on drums) is ready to channel all their energy into a show that promises to amaze without leaving aside the “signature vibration” of the Kula Shaker. Especially because Natural Magick contains many passages of thoughtful reflection on the present: in Gaslighting it is sung that “the revolution will not be broadcast on social platforms”, while Something Dangerous presents itself as an ode to freedom, to question dogmas and the status quo. We also find the connection with and love for India, evident in Indian Record Player and his homage to Bollywood stars, as well as in Chura Liya (You Stole My Heart) which winks at vintage Indian cinema.

Could there be more? Yes, because the Ravenna Festival program does not end here, and will offer other great events for music lovers. For example on July 5th, with the Calexico concert at Palazzo San Giacomo (Russi) which will be opened by Don Antonio (aka Antonio Gramentieri) and Dalibor Pavičić (guitarist of the Croatian group Bambi Molesters), who together will present the new project Ghost Guitars.
