Students in solidarity with Palestine in Turin occupied the rector’s office of the University yesterday, asking that the Academic Senate, scheduled for today in an online session, be held in a joint session in the presence of the occupiers and also asking for a discussion with the rector Stefano Geuna.

“From the first days the rector asked for a meeting with those who are occupying Palazzo Nuovo (home of the humanities faculties, ed.) with the sole aim of interrupting the block of lessons – say the students – We had made the request for a senate session joint academic session where male and female students were present, but it was moved online. The rector has been avoiding any type of confrontation for more than a week.” “We will stay here until the senators and advisors show up for the in-person senate session. We have drawn up a document, together with the academic staff, which consists in the termination of any agreement with the Israeli university with our university – underline the students – The University must equip itself with the instrument of academic boycott in order not to say it is complicit in a genocide”.

According to the students occupying the rector’s office, the agreements that UniTo has with Israeli universities are many. “The University of Turin agreements are an integral part of the Palestinian genocide. The academic boycott is the only tool to avoid being complicit in the war crimes of the State of Israel”, conclude the students.

At the university of Florence following the student mobilization the first point of a motion was approved, in which the rector commits to taking a public position condemning Israel and bringing this position to the Conference of University Rectors (Crui). The second point, on agreements, has become a binding recommendation. An evaluation commission will be set up and a point on the evaluation criteria will be included in the code of ethics in which students will also be able to participate in some way to be defined
