Summer is rapidly approaching and those who have to travel abroad will be trying to organize themselves to get or renew their passport. With all the difficulties we have seen in recent times. But the situation could change very soon.
To date, there are 1,518 municipalities where it is possible to obtain a passport at the post office, but the Government’s objective is for the application and renewal service to be available in all post offices in Italy. And the estimated date for the milestone, announced by Poste Italiane, is next July 2024.
Passport at the post office: where it can already be done today
It’s called the Polis project and it aims to streamline the very long waits for the issue or renewal of a passport which have recently affected millions of Italians, forced into very long queues, open days and emergency procedures to obtain the document. And so in recent months the Polis project began, which gave the opportunity to carry out the procedure also in the post offices of municipalities with under 15,000 inhabitants.
To date, there are 1,518 post offices involved throughout Italy.

Objective: all of Italy in July
But, as mentioned, from July the service should expand to all of Italy. The director general of Poste Italiane explained it Giuseppe Lasco at the end of a meeting with the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi.
“From July, once the necessary regulatory steps have been completed, this service will progressively involve post offices throughout Italy, without distinctions between small and large centres”.
“To date we have already started 2,400 interventions and completed over 1,500 post offices throughout Italy. On the recommendation of the Ministry of the Interior we have taken an active part in the extension of the passport request service to support the Police Headquarters and Commissariats, from last March we recorded more than 350 requests at the 31 post offices where the service is active and by the end of the month over 130 post offices will already be operational. I like to remember that over 80% of citizens have requested home delivery of their passport via Italian post office, with a saving of time and travel which is also and above all important for the environment”.
