Bad weather – Red alert in Veneto and Lombardy: today’s situation

The bad weather does not let go of Northern Italy: today Tuesday 21 May there is a red alert in Lombardy and Veneto with the rivers under special observation. Strong thunderstorms and cloudbursts expected. “These predicted rains might not have been so problematic, if in recent days we had not already had so much water that has soaked the territory and which we are still struggling to dispose of,” declared the president of the Veneto Region Luca Zaia.

Veneto

In Veneto during the night there was widespread rainfall, more continuous and consistent in the central-western part of the region where at times it was moderate/strong with showers and an isolated thunderstorm in the Rodigino, more discontinuous and generally scarce in the eastern part, it is known the regional civil protection.

Scattered and intermittent rainfall on the central-southern plain, widespread and still moderate/strong in the western pre-Alpine and piedmont areas, elsewhere scattered or at times widespread, generally weak or locally moderate. No storm phenomena are observed. The rainfall that has fallen in the last few hours has so far led to a limited increase in hydrometric levels in the Bacchiglione river basins, Agno-Guà system and in the Chiampo and Alpone basins.

In general, the Brenta, Bacchiglione and Alpone rivers are under observation, the routes of which affect all the provinces except that of Rovigo, where however the alert is orange for the lower Adige and part of the Po. Orange warning also for the lower course of the Piave, the Sile and the basins that flow into the lagoon.

Regarding the bad weather recorded in recent days, Zaia stated, “i damage is extensive, we do not yet have precise data, but there is certainly significant damage both to private individuals due to flooded homes and to infrastructure and landslides. It could have been worse, considering that we had a wave of bad weather comparable to that of 2010. We were saved only thanks to the hydraulic works that were carried out but there was still some damage” concluded the governor of Veneto”.

Lombardy

After the rains of the last few hours, in Milan the levels of Lambro and Seveso are “high but not worrying”, announce the firefighters, who keep the device active and on alert. While waiting for an update on the weather conditions from Arpa, the meteorological situation, they say, is “however improving”.

At an operational level this night there were no significant interventions related to the bad weather, mainly water damage and removal of trees that had invaded the roadway resolved in a short time. At 6.45 there were 57 total interventions and 15 interventions related to bad weather.

“At 6.30 there were no particular critical issues”, also announced the Councilor for Environment and Mobility of the Municipality of Milan, Marco Granelli. “During the night, constant rain in the city and in the North but of low and medium intensity – he wrote on Facebook -. Seveso constant with levels around one meter in Niguarda thanks to the work of the constantly active Palazzolo spillway. Tub not used for now. Lambro constant at around 2.15 in Milan via Feltre (Parco Lambro), therefore high but not at flood level”.

In the Pontelambro district, monitoring is “constant” by the Civil Protection and for now no flooding has been recorded even if water pumps and motor pumps remain “ready to intervene”. The underpasses are open while as regards the trees “there is an ongoing intervention in Piazza Perucchetti due to branches on the ATM network – explains the councilor – but no other problems for now”. Schools remain open. “We recommend maximum attention from everyone” underlines Grandelli. ANSA VENETO
