The Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana presents the eleventh edition of the Tuscany Trail, the largest bikepacking event in the world which every year brings together around 5,000 participants from every corner of the globe. Taking place on the weekend of May 24th, starting from Castagneto Carducci, the non-competitive race will cross the territory where the wines of the Denomination are born which the participants will find in their event packages – and in various refreshment points located along the route – with the aim to make the combination of wine and territory even more immediate.

“The Tuscan Maremma is the perfect example of an uncontaminated territory, a place where time passes gently and life is enjoyed calmly, absolutely suited to meeting the needs of slow tourism”, declares Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consortium, “Tuscany Trail represents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in this beauty, discovering the traces of a thousand-year history and territories where vines have been cultivated for centuries. The vineyards through which the route winds enjoy a terroir that stands out for its geographical diversity, its richness of soils and its moderate Mediterranean climate, which together contribute to the production of high quality wines with unique character and complexity”.

An unmissable experience for cycling lovers who wish to enter the beating heart of Tuscany, pedaling along a suggestive 470 km route on dirt and secondary roads, exploring natural areas of unparalleled beauty such as the coastal strip between Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia with the pine forests and rocks overlooking the sea, the Maremma plain in what was Lake Prile in Etruscan times, historic medieval and Renaissance villages, surrounded by hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, the scent of lavender and rosemary in the air.

But the bicycle trip is not just a way to discover the area, it is also an opportunity to embrace a slow lifestyle, slow down the pace and savor every moment with stops to taste authentic Tuscan dishes accompanied by DOC Maremma Toscana wines : from pure Vermentini to native red varieties also different from the famous Sangiovese such as Ciliegiolo and Alicante, passing through Bordeaux blends and pure international ones (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah for example).

Participants will have to complete the circular route independently, bringing with them everything they need to experience the adventure, putting themselves to the test on a challenging route, but accessible to all, under the gaze of hundreds of thousands of people.

Slow tourism in Maremma Tuscany is a complete experience for the senses, an invitation to slow down, to live in harmony with the surrounding environment and to discover the authentic beauty of one of the most fascinating areas of Italy which enjoys a mild climate during all year round and which also stands out for being one of the “greenest” areas in the country. Approximately 44% of the territory is in fact covered by woods and green areas, while viticulture is mostly carried out with organic methods or in conversion to organic. A virtuous example of how development and respect for the environment can go hand in hand.
