The watchword, and for those who do their job it couldn’t be otherwise, is only one: “Safety”. Both the real one and the perceived one. A theme that is particularly felt in Milan, in that city that he defines as “international, always changing” and which inevitably feels a bit like home to him. Because Bruno Megale, the new police commissioner of Milan, has already spent fifteen years under the Madonnina, first in the anti-terrorism section and then as director of Digos.

“For me it is a welcome return, I have lived 15 years of my professional experience here”, are in fact his first words on Monday morning, on his new first “day of school” in Milan. “Thanks to the police chief and the Ministry of the Interior for this prestigious position, of which I feel the honor and burden. I can say right now – his promise – that I will put all my energy and resources to do the job as best as possible.” Megale, 57 years old, from Calabria, police commissioner in Reggio Calabria for three and a half years, left the Milanese capital in 2015, but the intention is to settle back in immediately. “I have experienced this city’s way of feeling first hand. I have a knowledge gap from nine years spent traveling around Italy but I will work from today to address the problems that, I won’t hide it, exist.”

The guiding star will be citizens’ demand for safety, which must be satisfied because “the police is an organization at their service”. “Before talking about problems I want to read up, but I say that we will try to work on safety and perception, on the perceived insecurity sanction”, the first commitment of the new commissioner, who intends to give himself “a scale of priorities, including some aspects of safety certainly fall within it.”

“The city is very demanding, but all the police forces are on track,” assured Megale, one of the world’s greatest experts on terrorism, who in Milan had investigated the kidnapping of the imam of Viale Jenner, Abu Omar. Thus, alongside repression, investigations and the management of public order, much space will be given to prevention. With the stated aim of “giving immediate answers to the city”.
