THE Carabinieri of the ROS he was born in Provincial Command of Messinain the context of two distinct activities, have implemented two decrees seizure of assetsissued by the Court of the Peloritano capital – Prevention Measures Section, upon proposal of the local Anti-Mafia District Attorney’s Office, against two mafia suspects in relation to the criminal organizations of Tortorici and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto.
The seizure carried out by ROSaimed at possible future confiscation, arises from the patrimonial investigations, which have made it possible to verify and document how the proposed, exponent with a top role of the mafia family “tortoriciana”articulation of “batananese”, currently detained, arrested on January 15, 2020 within the scope of the operation conventionally named “Nebrodi”, conducted under the coordination of the local District Anti-Mafia Directorate, had accumulated, over time, assets that were disproportionate to the incomes declared by him and his family.
In particular, the October 31, 2022the subject, following the outcome of the first instance trial resulting from the 2020 operation, was sentenced by the Court of Patti (ME) to sentence of 16 years and 4 months in prison For mafia-type association, multiple aggravated scams in competition to obtain public funding and use of money of illicit origin and fraudulent transfers of valuesemerging as a real collector of interests in the sector of community aid on behalf of the mafia association investigated.
The seizure performed by Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Messinaalso the result of asset checks and aimed at possible confiscation, was issued against one of the leaders of the mafia association of the “family from Barcelona”, also detained, sentenced, already in 2007, definitively for mafia-type association and involved in several legal matters, in particular for the commission of multiple episodes of extortion, which allowed him to obtain significant illicit financial resources.
Lastly, the man was arrested on February 22, 2022as part of the investigation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Investigative Unit under the coordination of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate which disrupted the reorganization of the Longano mafia group, following which, on 3 February 2023, the sentence was issued against him of conviction, in an abbreviated trial, of the district GUP of Messina, to a sentence of 20 years in prison, as the chief promoter of the association.
THE seized goodsalso registered to the family members of the subjects involved, concerned, for the member of the family “Tortoriciana”, 3 agricultural businesses in Tortorici and numerous parcels registered in the Land Registry of the Municipality of Centuripe (EN), for a total value of approximately 90,000 euroswhile, as regards the exponent of the “Barcelona family”a property used for commercial use, located in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, with an estimated value of approximately 50,000 euros.
Both measures are part of a broad maneuver to combat mafia-type crime that the Carabinieri is conducting in the Messina District, under the direction of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It is also specified that the capital prevention measure was adopted following the first degree prevention judgment. It is a seizure for the purpose of confiscation therefore the proposed parties are to be presumed innocent until the finality of the provision which ascertains their responsibility following the outcome of the further levels of judgement, which can also be concluded with proof of the absence of any form of responsibility and the restitution of the goods.
