Weather alert, Africa churns out storms that reach Italy

A storm front is moving up Italy this time Sunday 19 May: caused heavy rain in Sardinia in the early hours of the morning, 11mm the rainfall accumulation on Cagliari where the temperature dropped to +17°C, and now storms are hitting western Sicily. Heavy rain in Trapani and Scopello, the temperature dropped to +19°C while in eastern Sicily the sun shines veiled by the sand of the Sahara and it is hot with peaks of +30°C in Gela, +29°C in Noto, +27°C in Taormina, +25°C in Catania, Messina and Syracuse.

The storm front is moving up the Tyrrhenian Sea and will also arrive in Lazio and Campania in the next few hours, as well as encompassing all of Sicily and southern Calabria during the day:

A very important day today also for the Tour of Italy which arrives in the Alps with a very hard stage: it is the longest stage of this edition, of 222kmwith a height difference of 5,400 metres from Manerba del Garda at 2,385 meters above sea level in Livigno, after 5 very tough climbs including the epic Mortirolo. The stage will start at 10.25am with an estimated arrival just before 4.30pm, after around six hours in the saddle. Pay attention here too bad weatherlurking in the final phase of the race.

Weather alert for tomorrow, Monday 20 May

Tomorrow, Monday 20 May, a third African front will move up Italy after those of yesterday and today. This time it will be much more intense with a real cyclonic structure that will rise from the Maghreb towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, fueling impetuous sirocco winds on Sicily and Calabria, and then in the afternoon-evening mistral winds on Sardinia.
