TRANI – Discriminated due to a lift that had been broken for too long. This is the story of an 18-year-old from Trani, disabled, who attends the fourth year of Itis Jannuzzi in Andria, today formally Itt penalized by the bureaucratic delays that prevent the repair of his school’s lift. From a logistical point of view, the student is fully aware of the fact that he has to commute every day between his city and the city where the technical institute he attends is located. Within that complex, however, his quality of life has changed over the past month, and unfortunately for the worse.

In fact, the lift that would allow him to reach his lesson room on the first floor without the help of school collaborators has been blocked for a long time. The young man, in fact, has a partial disability which forces him to walk with the aid of a walker. But this then becomes an insurmountable obstacle when, due to the elevator not working, the student is forced to climb the stairs: with one hand he is able to lean on the handrail but on the other hand he needs someone to assist him and a other than bring the walker too.

This story has been repeating itself for too many weeks and, moreover, it does not only concern him but also a teacher with a problem not as important as that of the boy, but in any case she too objectively penalised, as well as from time to time students who are injured during their sporting activities.

The boy’s mother, Mrs. Vincenza, has been in contact with the school management for some time, urging them to find a solution. And in turn the principal of the institute, Giuseppe Monopoli, assures us that he was the protagonist of an extensive correspondence both with the Province of Barletta Andria Trani, responsible for solving the problems of school buildings, and with the same operator who deals with of elevator maintenance. The latter replied that the Province is perfectly aware of the problem, but has not yet ensured that the company can resolve it.

It seems to be understood, therefore, that this is a purely economic issue which, however, should have been overcome promptly. In fact, a problem of this type, which continues for such a long time, creates not only a physical barrier, but also a moral and psychological one for a boy who should only concentrate on his school activities and instead feels, despite himself, like a second-class student.

The reporter tried to contact the president of the Province, Bernardo Lodispoto, to get information from him about the timescale for solving the problem: we are waiting for a response that reassures the boy, the family and all the actors interested in this affair which would should have been ordinary and, instead, it is becoming unpleasantly extraordinary.
