PRATO – Marine pollution has devastating repercussions on everyone’s health and life. His solo journey along the Italian coasts will serve to raise awareness and tell what is happening in our seas but also to collect data collected together with the Wind of Change team. Hero Leone Ortega, 27 years old from Prato which is circumnavigating Italy with its canoe for a voyage which “aims to raise awareness as many people as possible about the severity and impacts that marine pollution has on all of us. We cannot remain indifferent and it is necessary to change our daily behavior and our consumption, starting to be more respectful of the environment and, therefore, of our future”.

After the Molise stage, Ortega arrived in Torre Mileto, in the municipality of San Nicandro Garganico in the province of Foggia, between the lakes of Lesina and Varano, and then continued through Vieste and Manfredonia. The canoe trip will continue in the next few days along the coasts of Puglia up to Taranto, and then proceed towards Calabria, in particular Reggio Calabria. An opportunity to talk about what is happening in our seas but also to collect data.

The aim of the 27-year-old from Prato is to reach Genoa, crossing the Strait of Messina. In the 90 scheduled stages, on a route of 1,511 nautical miles, Ortega is accompanied by Giacomo Arrighini who follows him in his minivan, guaranteeing safety and logistical support along the way. The project called “wind of change” aims to promote the protection of the marine environment through concrete actions with the support of plastic free onlus, a voluntary association committed since 2019 to combating plastic pollution.

Events will take place during its stages clean up of the beaches, together with local communities and volunteers.
