For the fourth consecutive time, the Municipality of Sassari has won three Blue Flags: for the beaches of Platamona, Porto Ferro and Porto Palmas, to which the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) has recognized the important prize international dedicated to seaside tourist resorts whose management is carried out according to specific sustainability criteria. The official award ceremony took place yesterday, May 14, in Rome.

The Blue Flag season for the beaches of Sassari begins on July 1st and ends on August 31st. During this period all services will be active and all Blue Flag requirements will be met. The beaches may be subject to control visits by FEE officials, to verify compliance with the criteria established by the program; therefore, confirmation of the assignment of the Flag is never a given.

There will be 485 Blue Flags in Italy in 2024, distributed across a total of 236 Municipalities. The suitability requirements are many: starting from the quality of the water, for which periodic sampling is envisaged (only beaches with water classified as “excellent” in the last four years can aspire to the assignment), to continue with the efficiency of wastewater purification and sewerage network, through the conservation and biodiversity of marine ecosystems and beach cleaning, separate collection and adequate management of hazardous waste.

Particular attention is paid to the safety of swimmers, with rescue services and signaling of safe water limits, accessibility for all, and the presence of a water point and toilets.

Finally, ample space must be dedicated to environmental education, aimed in particular at schools and young people, tourists and residents: the Environmental Education Center (Ceas) Lago Baratz will carry out activities and workshops both in the Center and on the beaches awarded the Blue Flag. At Ceas Lago Baratz the “Blue Point” will also be established, an information point to obtain information on the program.

Fee Italia, through a national jury, identifies the suitable Municipalities among those that have submitted applications, through the analysis and evaluation of the documented responses to the questions reported on the Blue Flag questionnaire.

The Blue Flag is a voluntary ecolabel (European Union ecological quality mark) assigned to seaside tourist resorts managed with the main objective of promoting sustainable management of the territory through indications that place attention and care for the environment at basis of political choices.
