Mazara, Unitirreno’s submarine fiber optic cable obtains environmental authorizations

Unidata, the main Italian-controlled Internet Service Provider, announces an important milestone achieved by Unitirreno Submarine Network SpA, the new-co established in 2022 for the construction of a large underwater digital infrastructure project in the Mediterranean.

A fundamental step forward for connectivity in Italy – The Unitirreno project, which involves the laying of a submarine fiber optic cable with cutting-edge technology, has obtained environmental authorizations for the landing points in Mazara del Vallo, Genoa and Rome. This is a fundamental step for the completion of the work, whose commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025.

Meeting growing broadband needs – The aim of the project is to meet ever-increasing broadband needs, both nationally and internationally. The new infrastructure will significantly contribute to the country’s digital transition and its economic development.

An innovative and high-performance system – The Unitirreno submarine cable will be the first of its kind in the Mediterranean to reach the maximum use capacity of repeaters and fiber cables. This result was achieved thanks to the use of cutting-edge technologies that guarantee high performance and reliability.

An open and flexible infrastructure – The new submarine cable system will feature an open cable structure, allowing customers to choose the technological solutions best suited to their needs.

A project in line with European objectives – The Unitirreno project is in line with the European objectives of digital infrastructure development. The new infrastructure will help improve the Mediterranean’s connectivity and strengthen its position in the global digital landscape.

“Obtaining the landing permits represents an important step forward for Unitirreno”, declared Renato Brunetti, CEO of Unidata and Unitirreno. “These permits will allow us to create a modern and efficient network infrastructure that will contribute to the digital development of the country.”

“The new submarine cable system will allow Unitirreno to provide innovative submarine fiber optic technology,” added Andrea Cornetti, President of Unitirreno. “Alcatel Submarine Networks’ expertise and technology will be critical to the success of the project.”

“The Unitirreno submarine cable project is significantly contributing to improving regional connectivity in the Mediterranean,” underlined Arturo Danesi, COO of Unitirreno. “The Unitirreno project represents a significant step forward in meeting the growing demand for reliable communications infrastructure.”

The Unitirreno project represents an important investment for Italy’s digital future. The new fiber optic infrastructure will help improve the country’s connectivity and encourage the development of new economic and social opportunities.
