Eleven inmates attempted to stage a riot in the Civitavecchia penitentiary. Moments of great tension occurred on Monday 13 May 2024 when, around 11 am, inmates devastated a section of the facility.
They set fire to the mattresses, shattered the windows and then, using a fire hydrant, flooded the section itself. The whole affair lasted about two hours, during which the prison security forces intervened to contain the situation. Eventually, calm was restored and order returned to the penitentiary facility.
The news was given by Maurizio Somma, secretary for Lazio of the autonomous penitentiary police union: “A crazy devastation but, fortunately, there are no injuries either among the inmates or among the Penitentiary Police staff. It all seems to have arisen for trivial reasons. Well done to the Azzurri Basques for acting with great professionalism and cold blood.”
Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, denounces that “The situation in the Civitavecchia prison and in the other Lazio prisons is alarming also because in recent weeks other officers have suffered attacks by the inmate population. The staff is increasingly fewer, also following these events which are now commonplace.
We foresee a fiery summer if concrete and decisive measures are not taken immediately. The Penitentiary Police staff are exhausted and, despite working more than 10/12 hours a day, are no longer able to guarantee the minimum levels of safety. How long can this situation last?”.
“It can no longer be postponed – concludes the Sappe leader – which for this reason appeals to the institutional and political authorities, “to equip the Penitentiary Police as soon as possible with the taser and any other useful tool to defend themselves from the violence of criminals who have no respect for the rules and for the people who represent the State” .
