For the local elections on 8 and 9 June there are three candidates for the office of mayor of Bergamo. Taking the place of the outgoing mayor, Giorgio Gori (after two consecutive terms), will be one of: Elena Carnevali (DEM candidate), Andrea Pezzotta (centre-right candidate) and Vittorio Apicella (M5S candidate).

Who are the mayoral candidates in Bergamo

The dem candidate, also supported by Verdi, Sinistra Italiana +Europa and PSI, is Elena Carnevali, 59 years old. In 1999 you were elected city councilor with the DS, in opposition to the Forzista mayor Cesare Veneziani. Five years later she was instead appointed councilor for social policies, migration and international cooperation of the new council formed by the mayor Roberto Bruni. After a third experience in the Bergamo Council, Carnevali entered Parliament as a deputy of the Democratic Party: a position then confirmed also between 2018 and 2022. The centre-right candidate – supported by Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, Forza Italia and Noi Moderati – is the lawyer Andrea Pezzotta. Lawyer for the parents of Yara Gambirasio – the thirteen year old murdered in 2011 near Brembate di Sopra -, she is 67 years old. He was also councilor for urban planning of the municipality of Bergamo from 2009 to 2014. Instead he runs for the M5s Vittorio Apicella: 60 years old, professor of Psychology at the Mariagrazia Mamoli Institute, has already been municipal councilor from 1988 to 1995 in the Municipality of Campagna (province of Salerno) where he was also councilor for budget, finance and economic planning.

The municipal elections

Since Bergamo is a municipality with more than 15,000 inhabitants, if no candidate in the first round obtains an absolute majority, then a run-off will be held between the two most voted. The possible run-off round will be held on Sunday 23 June from 7am to 11pm, and on Monday 24 June, from 7am to 3pm.
