Given the need to intervene to protect public health and hygiene to prevent and control infectious diseases transmissible to humans through the bite of insect vectors, in particular the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), the company appointed by the Environment and Ecology Service of The Municipality has already taken steps, compatibly with the weather conditions which have significantly influenced the activity, to carry out an initial larvicidal disinfestation intervention. In the coming weeks, again based on weather conditions, Adulticidal and Larvicidal interventions are planned in the various areas of the city, of which residents will also be notified by placing information signs.

It should also be noted that this year the company in charge of carrying out the interventions first carried out an initial control of the mosquito population using ovitraps positioned in public green areas: these are tools for obtaining large quantities of data on the distribution density of some species of mosquitoes that are not very mobile and can be difficult to catch in other ways. This indirect method of surveillance allows us to obtain information in step with the development of the adult population starting from the initial presence, following its increase and expansion, so as to plan more targeted and effective larvicidal and adulticidal interventions.

In the meantime, the Mayor has already signed the ordinance, published in the Municipality’s Notice Board (https://www.comune.cremona.it/servizionline/albopretorio/atti-del-comune-di-cremona/albo-pretorio-dettaglio -act/2024/1284), with precise provisions to combat the spread of mosquitoes aimed at managers, managers or those who in any case have the actual availability of structured areas with rainwater collection systems; to public and private entities that are managers, responsible or in any case have actual availability of railway embankments, road embankments and verges, watercourses, uncultivated areas and abandoned areas; to all vegetable garden managers; to the owners and managers or to the subjects who in any case have the actual availability of warehouses and industrial, artisanal and commercial activities, with particular reference to scrapping activities and storage of recycled materials in general; to managers of tire depots, even temporary, for repair, regeneration and sale activities and to tire holders in general; to construction site managers.

The ordinance also aims to inform and raise awareness among citizens on the correct behavior to adopt to contain the proliferation of mosquitoes. In fact, collaboration with condominium administrators and with all those who deal with the maintenance and care of green areas and private gardens is fundamental, as well as the indications provided by ATS Val Padana, regarding the need for active participation of citizens.
