SOLOISTS AND DANCE CORPS OF THE SNG OPERA IN BALET LJUBLJANA

Orchestra and technicians of the Giuseppe Verdi Lyric Theater Foundation of Trieste

The great ballet returns to Trieste with the title commonly considered the icon of European Romanticism and today an indispensable classic for those who love dance, Adam’s Giselle on the libretto by the romantic theorist Gautier inspired by the German poet Heine. A tale of love and death, fairies and spirits, Giselle maintains its evocative, dreamlike, elegant and sentimental charm unchanged, especially in the new and praised production of SNG Opera in Balet of Ljubliana, Verdi’s partner, led by the charismatic Veronese artistic director Renato Zanella .

Signed by the current director of the Paris Opera ballet, the Spaniard José Carlos Martinez, this Giselle represents today one of the best possible versions on the international scene.

A must-have work for anyone who loves ballet, Giselle by Adam and Gautier still represents an inescapable cornerstone of the great romantic ballet, and its iconic, fairy-tale and sentimental nature remains inviolable and resistant to any updating and therefore reaches us in a classic, elegant form and sumptuous, in the new production in Ljubljana with choreography by José Carlos Martinez, former principal dancer of the Paris Opera, where he is still director of the corps de ballet and for a long time director of the National Dance Company of Spain. With him in Trieste the costumes of Iñaki Cobos Guerrerospecialized in the creation of dance costumes and with a long career on the best European stages starting from the Teatro Real in Madrid.

The musical direction of the Verdi Orchestra returns to the young Belgian Ayrton Desimpelaere, already esteemed and known by the Julian public both in ballet and in the symphony season. On stage the dance company of SNG Opera in Balet, young, fresh, international, enthusiastic and engaging, as already demonstrated in the many past collaborations with Verdi, a true Italian-Slovenian artistic enclave with Italy represented this year by Filippo Jorio and Erica Pinzano.

The role of Giselle will be embellished by the star of the Marinsky-Kirov and Kiev National Opera Anastasia Matvienko, a divine star who has repaired to Ljubljana and is now in our theater for the first time after having performed on the most prestigious stages in the world. Alternating with Matvienko in the role, the Slovenian star Nina Noc, in other performances also present as Myrtha, implacable queen of the Wilis, otherworldly creatures, ruthless avengers of love, from which, thanks to Giselle, the young Puccini took inspiration for the his work of the same name. The young Japanese Marin Ino closes the trio of Julian Giselles.

In the role of the male protagonist Albrecht Kenta Yamamoto, a Japanese man who grew up artistically first in China and then in London, has been a cornerstone of Slovenian ballet since 2010. With him Yujin Muraishi, already in Romeo and Juliet in ’23 and the young Italian Filippo Jorio.

The sophisticated lights of the Slovenian Andrej Hajdiniak, who grew up in Cankarjev dom, will complete and enhance paintings of great classicism and refined elegance for a truly timeless show in one of the titles where the great Slavic tradition of ballet can only give its best.

Superintendent Giuliano Polo comments: “The collaboration with SNG of Ljubljana grows stronger year after year and always gives us new satisfactions, above all it allows us to meet the new passion for dance of the entire Italian public, thus offering an excellent cultural service to our city and at the same time strengthening those artistic and human relationships across borders that are part of our collective identity”

Comments the Artistic Director Paolo Rodda: “Every time I go to Ljubljana to choose what to bring to Trieste in our seasons, I am struck by their inexhaustible creativity, by the excellent quality of all the productions, by the desire for novelty, by the great respect for the highest tradition. We are already working with the tireless Maestro Zanella for the coming years and I believe that Trieste can only benefit from this project for all the years to come”

The Artistic Director of the Ljubljana ballet Renato Zanella says: “The classic is the new modern. The challenge of reproducing the masterpieces of Romantic ballet in the development of dance today is an art in itself. In the version we have chosen, Josè Martinez, étoile of the Paris Opera currently directing the dance troupe of the same name, takes up that fresh simplicity of the story, elevating it, thanks to rigorous research into detail, to a masterpiece of that historical period, certainly in my opinion one of the most beautiful versions of the current international repertoire.”
