REGGIO CALABRIA The hearing will be held on July 2nd before the Reggio Calabria magistrate Irene Giani for the 40 suspects as part of the “Magnifica” investigation coordinated by the Reggio Calabria prosecutor’s office which in April 2022 shed light on a series of piloted competitions and irregularities in the management of contracts at the Mediterranean University. The accusations
According to what emerged from the investigations, around the University of Reggio there was a real “criminal association” aimed at “committing multiple crimes against the public administration and public faith in the direction and management of the University” and departmental structures. Among those under investigation are the former rector Saint Marcello Zimbone and the former vice-rector Pasquale Catanoso, who would be “leaders and promoters” of the association. In addition to them, other figures indicated as important within the alleged associationaccording to the investigators, they would have been the general director (until 4 May 2021) Ottavio Amaroindicated «as the organizer of the association of decisive importance» having allowed the implementation of the illicit decisions of the two rectors and, as such, «omitting the fulfillment of the role of guarantor of legality in the management of the human and material resources of the University». Gianfranco Neri, Adolfo Santini, Massimiliano Ferrara they are instead called into question in their capacity as department directors, accused of having supported and implemented the illicit management hypothesized by the two rectors. As reported in the documents of the investigation «from time to time they identified and planned the comparative procedures to be piloted, and the colleagues to progress in terms of contractual framework, determining the undue destination of the financial resources assigned to the department for the pursuit of personal goals ». The teacher is then classified as “participating in the association”. The investigation
The investigation, conducted by the financial police, started from the complaint of an architect, Clarastella Vicari Aversa, who had been rejected in a competition for researchers. A selection which, according to the accusation, was guided by the top management of the University and by some professors who were also under investigation. The victim would have been invited to “wait his turn” and to renounce the appeals presented to the TAR and the Council of State.
In addition to the rigged competitions, the investigation highlighted irregularities in the selection of the examining commissions through the choice of members deemed “reliable” and therefore suitable to guarantee favorable treatment to individual candidates chosen “directly” or following a “report”. The investigations also revealed irregularities in the management of contracts and the use of credit cards and cars, registered with the university, for personal reasons. ([email protected])
