The demonstration on the day of the 46th anniversary of the journalist’s murder at the hands of the mafia. A delegation from the Fnsi and Assostampa Sicilia, with the general secretary Alessandra Costante, the president of the regional council Tiziana Tavella and the secretary of the Sicilian union, Giuseppe Rizzuto, took part on Thursday 9 May 2024 in the procession in memory of Peppino Impastato which every year is held from Terrasini to Cinisi on the anniversary of the murder of the journalist, which occurred in 1978.
«The National Press Federation participates in the procession to testify, after many years, the role of Peppino Impastato who made his voice an extraordinary instrument of truth and information», said Costante. “It is all the more important to pay homage to Impastato’s memory today,” he added, “while Italy slips to 46th place in the international press freedom ranking due to the many gags surrounding information.”
In the morning, the general secretary had participated in the seminar entitled ‘The rights of journalists from maternity to welfare’ at the Assostampa headquarters in Palermo. Contract and trade institutes to defend work and family. «We have a backward welfare system and the information – she observed – is no longer what we knew until the 1990s. We find ourselves in a very serious situation and the result is that the poor workers of today, and in journalism they are increasingly poor, will be the poor pensioners of tomorrow.”
With secretary Costante, the meeting was attended by the director Tommaso Daquanno, the national councilor of the Fnsi Roberto Ginex, Sergio Magazzù, provincial secretary of Assostampa Messina and deputy secretary Ussi Sicilia, Tiziana Martorana, councilor of the regional Order of Journalists.
«We need – the number one of the union remarked again – greater trust and greater knowledge of rights. But new tools are also necessary to protect maternity, the family and all workers. There is a disconnect between the employment contract and reality: it is necessary to renew our contract, design a new welfare system, restore to journalistic work that dignity which today is slapped in the face and we cannot allow it. Because the lack of rules and dignity kills workers and information.”
