Arnaldi overtakes Mayot and flies to the second round of the 2024 Internazionali d’Italia: he will challenge the Chilean Nicolas Jarry.

Matteo Arnaldi overcomes in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia beating the Frenchman in three sets Hugo Mayot after two hours and thirty-two minutes with the final score of 3-6 7-5 6-4. In the second round he will challenge the Chilean Nicolas Jarry, seeded number twenty-one of the Rome tournament.

The blue tennis player defeated the French lucky loser, brought back into the draw after Tomas Machac’s retirement, with a sufficient performance and not without difficulty.

The start was difficult for Arnaldi, who immediately conceded two break points but then saved himself, conditioned by the great humidity caused by the rain: Mayot started well and was lively and reactive, so much so that he took home the first set by finding another break for the final 6-3.

Nadal immortal at the Rome Internationals: wins this point after falling and triumphs in a comeback

The second set is more balanced but Arnaldi accelerates at a certain point, making the most of the first chances given to him by his opponent and finds the first break of his match with a perfect short ball. In the following game he closes at zero (7-5) and ties the score: everything is postponed to the third set.

Mayot starts better but at a certain point makes a series of errors and Arnaldi takes advantage: the French tennis player suffers the blow and gives way to the blue, who with a couple of extraordinary shots closes the game for the final 6-4.

An important factor for Arnaldi was also the crowd at Centrale, which helped him to finally get out of trouble and get the better of the Frenchman. After a somewhat difficult start, also due to physical problems, the Italian tennis player managed to rise to the level and earn a very important qualification.

In the next round, as already mentioned, there will be Nicolas Jarry, who beat Arnaldi twice in as many matches played but they were always very high tension and very open matches until the end.
