Late frosts in Veneto and the evaluation of the ANGELA service

The period of late frosts ended on April 30th, in which Arpav supports farmers in the management of anti-freeze vehicles with the ANGELA real-time forecasting service.

From 10 March to 30 April, farmers registered with the service, as temperatures were forecast to fall below zero, were able to follow the evolution of the situation via free text messages sent by Arpav and published in real time on the dedicated page. The only late frost recorded in the period was between 19 and 21 April when, following an outbreak of arctic air, the temperature values fell well below the reference average for several days, with consequent damage on orchards and vineyards.

A questionnaire for evaluating the service

Those registered with the service were able to express their opinion and indicate whether they consider it necessary to change the frost surveillance period given the increase in temperatures in recent years which has led to early flowering and the advance of late frosts.

62% of respondents say they are satisfied with the current forecast period for late frosts, 27% would prefer an extension of the period.

We find the same percentage of 62% satisfied for early frosts.

Adequacy of the service activation period

Frosts late

Frosts early

79% of respondents consider the time at which alert and update text messages are sent to be adequate to activate anti-frost measures and protect crops.

SMS alert and update: appropriate sending times

Given the responses received from those registered with the forecast service, ANGELA will also be active for next autumn from 10 October to 30 November, for the early frost warning.
