Not just the sky…a weekend of events with the Schiaparelli Astronomical Society

Friday 10 May at 9pmat the Salone Estense of the Municipality of Varese, in via Sacco 5, la Schiaparelli Astronomical Society will host the demographer Alessandro Rosina, professor of Demography at the Catholic University of Milan. The evening will focus on the theme: “Between demographic winter and global warming: what future for the planet?” The demographics of the 21st century can be summarized with four “i’s”.

The first is that of the environmental impactor the need to make sustainable, in the broadest sense, the presence on the planet of over 10 billion people, the second challenge is that of technological innovation, which must be an opportunity to increase the valorisation of the anthropological specificities of new generations within production processes of new well-being supported by increasingly “enabling” technology.

The third challenge is that of immigration. Never before has there been so many people living in a country other than the one in which they were born as in this century. When accompanied by adequate policies (strengthening cooperation between states, promoting integration measures, developing intercultural skills), migratory flows can contribute to inclusive economic growth and sustainable development in both the countries of departure and destination.

Finally, the challenge ofaging of the population: There have never been so many elderly people within the world’s population. Containing the negative consequences of the demographic imbalances produced by the birth rate and promoting the virtuous aspects of longevity – taking up the challenge of adding quality to the extra years gained (in positive relation with the social and environmental context) – is perhaps the main challenge that demography poses .

Sunday 12 May instead, the meteorological and naturalistic themed event already scheduled last week and canceled due to bad weather will be revived at the Dacia of Villa Baragiola, home of the Prealpine geophysical centre. At 3.30 pm the show “L’Arbre Magique” by and with Jane Bowie will be held. It is a show, dedicated mainly to families and children, which tells of the fascinating life of trees and their small and large mysteries. At the end, at 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm it will be possible to visit the Prealpine Geophysical Center, the meteorological station located in the Park and discover how weather forecasts and climatology studies are made. At 4.30 pm a visit to the natural beauty of the Villa Baragiola Park will also be organised.

The events are free and booking is not necessary.
