ROVIGO – August 31, 2023, May 8, 2024: more than 8 months et al Arturo Ponzetti skating rink not a leaf moved. On that late summer day the municipality of Rovigo closed the facility in via Malipiero to start the redevelopment of the historic skating house in the Commenda district. A decision – announced some time ago – which forced the three Rovigo companies (Olympic Skaters, Figure skating And Skating Club) and packing your bags and literally jostling to find some space in the city gyms already occupied by other disciplines. Yes, because the skating rink in via Malipiero closed and hundreds of skaters found themselves without an adequate covered structure.

THE SACRIFICES
A sacrifice justified by the possibility of being able to return to via Malipiero in spring 2026 at the end of the radical redevelopment intervention planned thanks to a substantial Pnrr loan of 2.1 million euros. The redevelopment, however, had to be preceded by the removal of the existing one, with a first phase of the works consisting in the dismantling of the system, and a second phase of actual demolition. An intervention included in the planning linked to the Pnrr but carried out by the Municipality with a separate procedure compared to the reconstruction. And it is precisely this first phase, fundamental in any case, that has suffered a notable, very serious delay compared to when the Skating Track was closed. Demolition never started.
The inconveniences for practitioners of figure skating, racing skating and freestyle skating seemed to need to be quickly mitigated by the much-ballyhooed creation of a pressostructure with a new multipurpose platform on the back of the Paleocapa scientific high school, practically a brand new facility useful to skaters and high school students . But even a shadow of this vaunted structure has never been seen.
All this while the winter passed with the skaters of the three companies having to make do with reduced spaces and facilities of limited dimensions, without considering that the freestyle skaters of Skating Rovigo found space on the platform of the Polisportiva Tassina where the young athletes of Skateboard Rovigo. Yes, because nothing has yet been seen of the Skate Park inside the Maddalena Park while the old structures have been removed.

FUTURE PROBLEMS
And now? From Monday in Tassina freestyle and skateboarding will have to pack their bags because the facility will be used by Gs Duomo to set up a synthetic grass five-a-side football pitch after the club had to leave the historic facilities along the ring road. Their destination will be the Rose Skating Stadium – the facility of excellence built and managed by Skating Rovigo which organizes the national Corsican skating competition at the weekend with more than 500 athletes from all over Italy.
Considering that the Province is planning to renovate its own gyms, the future for roller riders looks bleak as the possibilities of having covered facilities will be further reduced. Thus, after the insult of having seen “their house” needlessly closed for nine months Olimpica Skaters, Pattinaggio Artistico Rovigo and Skating Rovigo will find themselves with the damage of having even fewer spaces from September onwards. In short, swimmers cry in the city, but skaters don’t laugh much.
