The public subsidiary Asa has decided to implement investments of 18.5 million euros – to be completed by 2026 – for “Investments in primary water infrastructure for the security of water supply in the municipalities of Livorno and Collesalvetti”.

Approximately 10 million euros come from the Fund for non-deferrable works of the Ministry of Economy, while 6.3 come from Pnrr resources, which the managers coordinated by the Tuscan Water Authority (including ASA) have been very able to obtain, being able to count overall on approximately 214 million euros.

This attractive capacity allows you to limit the impact on the investment tariff; in this specific case, only approximately 2.2 million euros will arrive from this financing source.

The initiative has the dual objective of increasing the resilience of the aqueduct system of Livorno and Collesalvetti but also of improving the quality of the water treated and distributed by the Mortaiolo power plant serving the Collesalvetti and Livorno aqueducts and, for the latter in particular , in the areas south of Barriera Margherita.

The interventions are divided into three macro works: the first two consist of the construction of new interconnection, mixing and service safeguard pipes and the third of a very complex and rare, if not unique, plant engineering nature in this size in the national territory.

The majority of the investment is concentrated (for 13.5 million euros) on this latest intervention, which in turn is based on three pillars: new water softener, 5,000 m3 compensation tank and revamping of the current deferromanganization plant.

The current Mortaiolo well field, with its 1989 plant for the treatment of iron and manganese, of which the water of this aquifer is naturally rich, can produce and treat up to 300 l/s and for short periods, in case of failures in the Filettole supply, up to 340 l/s, compared to the 240 l/s achievable in 2016.

This important result was obtained thanks to the construction of eight new wells, in pairs on a single jacket, capable of drawing from aquifers located at different depths, reducing investment costs for the same amount of water produced.

The water from these aquifers, however, in addition to iron and manganese, has a significant hardness value, which certainly keeps it drinkable, but which can cause the classic small inconveniences in its domestic use, from clogging of the filters to the presence of whitish marks. on the dishes.

To reduce the hardness of the water distributed in Collesalvetti, Vicarello, Castell’Anselmo, Torretta, Crocino, Nugola, Parrana San Martino and San Giusto, as the water cannot be mixed with other local quality sources, a softening line will be built for hardness with ion exchange resin treatment inside the Mortaiolo plant.
