Concern is increasing over cases of Dengue virus in Italy. In Ferrara, an extraordinary disinfestation was implemented for a case of infection, which concerns a person resident in the city returning from a trip to a risk area and who is in good condition. The surveillance system activated as per the guidelines made it possible to identify the infection. The case was immediately communicated to the Public Health Department of the city’s Local Health Authority, we read in a note from the Local Health Authority.

Disinfestation

As foreseen by the regional surveillance and control plan, the extraordinary disinfestation protocol was subsequently started, given that the vector is in the period of seasonal activity. This is a prophylactic measure provided for by law, which should not cause alarm – highlights the ASL – and which is added to the ordinary interventions that are carried out to reduce the proliferation of mosquitoes in the area, and to immediately implement the control measures necessary to prevent the transmission of the virus from person to mosquitoes and from these to another person.

The phases of the protocol

The protocol, explains the note, “is divided into three phases: Adulticidal treatment at the first light of dawn in public areas for three consecutive days; Adulticidal, larvicidal treatments and removal of larval outbreaks in private areas (door to door); repetition of the larvicidal treatment in public sewers”. Furthermore, “the areas to be disinfested correspond to a radius of 100 meters from the patient’s home; residents in the affected area were notified with a targeted communication; during interventions it is recommended to close the windows, do not leave pets outside and collect any laundry hung in large areas”.
