Deaths at work, Judge: “Checks and training necessary”

Frost. In 2023, over a thousand people lost their lives at work. In the first three months of this year they are included in the sad list of complaints to INAIL 191 victims . Without still taking into account the other victims. Not numbers, but people who died on construction sites, in factories, in plants, along the roads. The latest accident occurred just yesterday around lunchtime. 5 workers died after falling into a manhole along state road 113 which connects Casteldaccia in Palermo, while a sixth worker is currently hospitalized in very serious conditions. This is the dramatic outcome of yet another accident at work, which occurred just five days after May 1st. Not even a month ago, on April 9th, the explosion in the hydroelectric plant of Suviana Lake in the province of Bologna, which caused seven victims.

Precisely on the occasion of the holiday dedicated to workers theInail has updated data on fatal accidents. There are 191 victims at work in Italy, of which 151 at work (3 more than in March 2023: +2%) and 40 while commuting (8 less than in March 2023). Total accident reports are growing by 0.4% compared to March 2023. They were, in fact, 144,586 at the end of March 2023, in 2024 they went to 145,130.

“It is no longer enough to stay close to families and organize strike days, the time has come to say enough – declares Ignazio Giudice, regional secretary of the CGIL – we must insist that companies carry out continuous and constant training before the workers start working. While serious and rigid controls are needed inside construction sites. Only in this way can the number of accidents and deaths be reduced.”
