Mineral oil trafficking investigation, 3 arrests in Basilicata

Four arrests were made and a series of searches were conducted for alleged trafficking of mineral oils in violation of tax regulations between Eastern Europe and Italy. Three of the subjects involved are originally from Basilicata, two of whom are currently in prison, while the third is under house arrest. They are two entrepreneurs (Francesco and Giovanni Caroli, father and son) and a haulier, Vito Miraglia. Among these also a municipal councilor of Bernalda, Giovanni Caroli, whose administrative activity is completely unrelated to the disputed facts. The investigations, launched two years ago by the economic-financial police of the Guardia di Finanza of Turin, led to the discovery of trafficking in lubricating oils from Bulgaria and Romania, which had evaded Italian taxation. The judge of the Court of Turin has issued restrictive measures against those arrested, who will be interrogated in Matera, despite his territorial incompetence. The defendants declared themselves ready to collaborate with the authorities.
