On Saturday 11 May, the city of Trieste will be the stage for an unprecedented initiative: “Illuminating that crumb”. Organized by the Acli and the Acli Sports Union, the event aims to raise awareness in the community about the daily challenges faced by people with disabilities.

The inspiration behind this initiative is to provide everyone with the opportunity to live, even if for a short time, the experience of being disabled. Ten wheelchairs, made available by ASUGI and positioned in the streets of the city centre, will be the focus of the event, allowing participants to experience first-hand the infrastructural difficulties that are often underestimated.

The support of the Municipality of Trieste and ASUGI has made possible the realization of this initiative which promises to be enlightening for the city. Manuel Zerjul, president of the Provincial ACLI of Trieste, underlined the importance of promoting democracy and participation, addressing the barriers that prevent many from fully accessing social life.

The route, which will start from Via Diaz 27 and end in Piazza Hortis, will include various difficulties that will allow participants to better understand the challenges faced by people with motor disabilities. Raoul Bernes, president of the Acli APS Sports Union – Provincial Committee of Trieste, underlined the importance of making tangible the real daily problems of people who are not independent in movements.

The event will be open to all citizens, both individually and in pairs, also giving the opportunity to exchange the roles of caregiver and patient. Massimo Tognolli, municipal councilor for social policies, reiterated the importance of directly understanding the difficulties faced by people with disabilities, highlighting the need for constant commitment on the part of administrators to improve the accessibility of cities.

“Shining That Crumb” represents a significant step towards greater awareness and inclusion in society, demonstrating that even seemingly small challenges can have a huge impact on the lives of people with disabilities.

In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to May 18th.
