Municipal Sassari – Giuseppe Mascia: «Making the accessible city a priority, the mayoral candidates should make concrete commitments now»

«All mayoral candidates undertake the commitment to make Sassari an accessible city among the priorities of the next administrative mandate». This is the appeal launched by Giuseppe Mascia, candidate for mayor of Sassari for the broad field, to his opponents. Yesterday morning Mascia spoke in the Angioy room of the Provincial Palace, in Piazza d’Italia, at the discussion promoted by the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired of Sassari to talk about disabilities and the urban context. Today the leader of the Democratic Party, unanimously indicated by his party and the coalition, returns to the topic after having received several reports on the impossibility for many people to access the “Open Monuments”, an event thanks to which last weekend they opened the doors of numerous palaces, monuments, libraries
and schools.
«Monuments open, but not for everyone», remarks Mascia, adopting the criticism made on social media by Francesca Arcadu, political activist and vice-president of the Uildm of Sassari. «Shops no, monuments no, bars and leisure places no.
But why should I feel part of this city if the city doesn’t remember me too?”, was his complaint on Facebook after having told of “all the entrances with steps that I checked on the Monuments map”, to the point to ask “why should I continue to cast my vote while fulfilling my civic duty if I can then benefit from a tenth of the city?”.
The position calls on the city’s political and administrative class to fully and explicitly assume responsibility. Taking charge of this, Giuseppe Mascia also addresses the other aspiring mayors and reiterates the commitment made yesterday on the occasion of the presentation of the book “The city of the present”, which collects information, advice and suggestions «which we will take into account throughout the adoption process in in the shortest possible time of Peba, the Plan for the elimination of architectural barriers of the Municipality of Sassari”, as Angioy had said during the works in the room. «The Sassari that we like is a city accessible and liveable by everyone», is the challenge relaunched today. «A city tailored to every single person is more fair, usable and welcoming – is his vision – taking into account different abilities represents the opportunity to achieve the change that the community expects through the redefinition of public spaces and
of their function”.
In the next few days Giuseppe Mascia will meet other associations that represent and protect the right to full citizenship of people with disabilities. «A renewed and inclusive city is the idea on which we intend to discuss and on which we are making concrete commitments from now on», he announces, «from the adoption of Peba to the request to the Sardinia Region to guarantee the Municipalities greater funds to be granted to private individuals for interventions of eliminating architectural barriers – concludes Mascia – and the verification through the Mof, i.e. the monitoring of financing opportunities, of possible further contributions for the removal of obstacles that oppose that change for Sassari of which we want to be the interpreters”
