Cagliari, the sea is eating up the 195 in Giorgino: a cliff on the beach will protect the road

A cliff on Giorgino beach. It will have to protect the 195 from the erosion caused by storm surges which is slowly devouring the beach and the road, putting the safety of motorists at risk. The Anas project only awaits the green light from the Region. It is called “final executive project for the construction of hydraulic defense works and adaptation of the roadway of the 195 “Sulcitana” between progressive lines 5+500 and 8+700, including the reconstruction of the bridge at km 8+050″. And it involves the construction of a rock barrier on the Giorgino beach (in the stretch of road that runs alongside the beach) to protect the beach and the reconstruction of the “Pontis Beccius” bridge which risks collapsing. The objective is to preserve public safety, and for this reason the intervention was included in the Plan of urgent civil protection interventions.

The objective is to make the road safe against erosion, generated by the action of the waves and changes in sea level, and the floods that occur more and more often during storm surges, especially during the winter season, representing in fact an emergency. In fact, both the bridge at km 8+050 and the nearby road are in poor condition and require urgent extraordinary maintenance.

Furthermore, to prevent dangerous situations for public safety, this stretch of road is temporarily closed due to sea ingress and strong gusts of wind which jeopardize the safety of the road itself, causing considerable inconvenience to road users. Inconveniences amplified by the existing road network which offers only one alternative route, consisting of the Casic-SP2-SS130-SS195 Racc ridge route, with a significant increase in travel times and distances.

The stretch extends for 3.2 km along the coast, between the kilometer progressions 5+500 (start of two lanes) and 8+700 (Casic dorsal roundabout) and is of exceptional naturalistic and landscape value also due to the presence of the beach and due to the high number of particularly relevant habitats in terms of biodiversity and is protected by a series of environmental and landscape constraints.

The planned intervention consists in the construction of a breakwater cliff made of natural boulders weighing between 500 kg and 1,500 kg arranged in two rows. The work, approximately 2,500 meters long, extends along the beach from the 5+550 kilometer marker to the 8+050 marker (Ponti Beccius), parallel to the SS 195 and spaced more than 2 meters from the edge of the road.

As regards the reconstruction of the bridge, only the reconstruction of the deck is envisaged with a composite steel-concrete type and the conservative restoration of the abutments through rehabilitation. For the duration of the works it will not be necessary to close the entire road.
