118 nurse attacked at Palazzo San Gervasio: here is the latest news

Following theassault against a nurse of the Emergency Department Urgency 118, intervenes General Director of Asp Antonello Maraldo “expresses solidarity with the worker, and invites you to frame the situation in the right context:

“which – as per the latest report sent to the Region at the request of the Ministry of Health – finds that attacks are not frequent phenomena in Basilicata where in a year – at least as regards the sectors of competence of Asp – the data on attacks on staff medical and nursing was zero.

What occurred at the Palazzo San Gervasio facility, starring a man in a state of psycho-physical agitationit could have happened in any other context and with any other citizen in the same altered physical and mental conditions.”

In these hours, given the sensitivity of the matter, the Management has deemed it necessary to carry out further and more detailed investigations “to understand what has happened in the meantime – added Maraldo – and make sure of the conditions of thenurse” who had a medical prognosis of five days but which from a personal point of view can be characterized by significant psychological effects.

What is certain is that today’s issue is not the aggression itself by a guest of the CPR, and therefore by a migrant, but in general the safety of healthcare workers in any context.

For the Director of Deu 118 Libero Mileti:

“What occurred against the 118 operator is an isolated case because Basilicata has always been free from phenomena of brutal physical attacks on healthcare workers.

In some cases there were verbal attacks but never did it lead to physical violence.

The aspect of operator safety is an issue that must be addressed at all levels, also involving those who physically manage, in this case, structures such as those of Palazzo San Gervasio where 118 intervenes daily”.

The ASP has drawn up a Protocol for attacks on healthcare workers in 2022 and in particular for Deu 118 also for the attacks possibly suffered by the patients’ families.

A protocol on ‘adverse events and risk management’ within which the form for ‘Incident Reporting’ is also inserted, differentiating the type of intervention and any aggression suffered in a healthcare environment or at home and reporting it to the prevention service of the General Directorate, evaluating also the skills and responsibilities of those who should have monitored, in this particular case the structure.

It being understood that precisely in the case of the attack suffered at the CPR, there are specific entry procedures that must always be respected.

For the head of the RSPP – Prevention and Protection Service of the Local Health Authority of Potenza – Mimma Laino:

“It is important that in any case of aggression the adverse event is reported and the ‘Incident Reporting’ form is filled out, a valid tool for the protection and protection of healthcare personnel”.

The General Director has already announced that he will implement a table to study systems of protection against aggression for healthcare personnel.

An ad hoc meeting with the unions will also be convened, discussing the topic relating to staff safety.
