The Italian Red Cross looks to the future with young people in mind: “We need to involve the new generations not only to bring them closer to the world of volunteering but also to enable them to be citizens of tomorrow”, it explains Rita Totinovolunteer of the Cri Committee of Piacenza and representative of the Olympics for the Piacenza group.

At the Cittadella del Rugby the teams, made up of five members plus a reserve of 17 to 19 year olds, engaged in rescue trials with expert simulators in life-saving maneuvers that are implemented in traumatic events, in the case of burn patients, but also on heart attacks or other pathologies. Furthermore, the defibrillator (AED) with the related cardio-pulmonary resuscitation maneuvers is a fundamental piece of the puzzle. Five high schools took to the field in the ducal city, demonstrating the skills acquired and the skills achieved in complex scenarios.

The first aid Olympics, now in their second edition, are an initiative promoted by the Italian Red Cross on a national scale. And the fourth classes of institutes from Parma, Forlì and Piacenza met in Parma. And the class of the Romagnosi-Casali school in Piacenza was awarded the opportunity to compete in the national competitions “which will see the teams of Italian schools put themselves to the test with rescue simulations which, after the regional phase, will be held at a national level” he explains Rita Totino, who adds: “The teams were selected within the classes that were trained by Red Cross operators on first aid maneuvers, through lessons and practical exercises both in the classroom and through simulations.”

The Lorenzo Respighi Scientific High School participated on behalf of Piacenza, with the boys accompanied by Professor Cinzia Catalano, and the Romagnosi-Casali Institute, with the girls accompanied by Professor Daria Catalano. Specifically, for both schools “we carried out the theoretical lessons during curricular time between the months of December and January – underlines Totino – while the practical tests were carried out on Saturday mornings in February, March and April”. The theoretical lessons were carried out by the instructors of life-saving maneuvers and Tssa (medical transport and ambulance rescue). While for the practical part, in addition to the instructors, make-up artists and simulators were also involved, for a total of a dozen volunteers. “At the beginning the students had to work hard to get involved but – Totino highlights with great satisfaction –, as time passed, they began to feel more involved and eager to put what they had learned into practice”.
