Cristina Guarda, regional councilor (Green Europe – Greens of Veneto).

“The P(fas) Generation was created in Veneto: citizens born with poisons in their blood and with whom they will have to deal with for their entire lives”.

This was declared by regional councilor Cristina Guarda (Green Europe).

“As much as we work to reduce their concentration – continues the regional councilor –, their presence since pregnancy has and will continue to subject us to risks. This is why a targeted and efficient level of information aimed at citizens must be guaranteed, as well as a system of constant controls. In the years of the economic boom it was believed that everything could be done in the name of well-being, but the fruit of that economic vision is a polluted Veneto which, according to research by the University of Padua, led to around 4000 deaths.

Those born in the 80s and 90s of the last century paid the highest price. We are talking about that cohort of citizens, among whom a high incidence of pathologies has been recorded, since at birth they literally suffered an involuntary transfer of Pfas from their mother’s blood. The incidence of malignant neoplastic and cardiovascular diseases, recorded in the red zone in Veneto, no longer leaves room for interpretations that tend to diminish the real significance of the facts. At the same time we cannot limit knowledge only to the data relating to the presence of Pfas in the blood, given that the very dangerous accumulation also occurs in internal organs. Furthermore, it should be remembered that contamination does not occur exclusively through water, but also through air polluted by waste and sludge incinerators, and the consumption of agricultural products from contaminated areas.

In light of these data, it is important to invest as much as possible in research to protect the air, farmers and food. Even more so, today the resolution that I recently proposed in the Veneto Regional Council takes on greater importance and unanimously approved resolution no. 79 and the article of law on maternity and Pfas that I had approved last year in the Region. Veneto shows that it cares about the health of its citizens. Science clearly explains that even just 20 nanograms of Pfas per ml of our blood constitute a strong health risk.”
