A gesture of love for one’s city. Shopkeepers and residents of the historic center of Reggio Emilia invite all those who, like them, are worried about how the historic center has become to a sit-in in Piazza del Monte scheduled for Saturday, 11 May, at 3pm.
A silent group will be formed, without slogans or polemical attitudes, and will be open to all. Shopkeepers, residents, families, even those who don’t work or live in the centre, because the center belongs to everyone.
The intent is to open a dialogue, a confrontation with the new administration to stimulate a decisive change of pace.
“We propose – say the organizers – to collaborate and work together, outside of political or associative alignments. We citizens know well the problems of the places where we work and live and we can, together, identify ideas and proposals to improve a situation that has dragged on for years and makes us tired, discouraged and disappointed”.
“For too long – they point out – there has been no real interest in promoting activities and residential areas in the heart of our city. For too long, we have looked elsewhere and citizens’ requests and requests have not been considered. We are also going through a phase of change in purchasing habits, oriented towards the web or towards large shopping centres. It is therefore necessary to give a new impetus to activities, so that, both day and evening, we can once again savor the pleasure of working and being in a welcoming and stimulating place, shopping and meeting in a setting of aesthetic and historical importance . In a city that is finally beautiful, clean, safe.”
The organizers of the sit-in point out the need and urgency of interventions to reverse the trend towards a “ghost city”, in which going to the center means encountering the difficulty of finding parking, finding oneself in a neglected context, of evident discomfort and social degradation, in places that have become unsafe and where residents and commercial activities are fleeing.
Appointment therefore in Piazza del Monte for all those who love Reggio Emilia.
