PERUGIA – The violence that breaks out at home. When you least expect it. With a relationship perhaps already worn out, but you certainly don’t think that one day you will also end up in hospital because of those arguments with a life partner. With the fear of losing an eye. Instead, this is what happened to a woman from Perugino. She is 56 years old, she is married and perhaps it is not the first time that her husband has put his hands on her. But surely she is the last. Because this time she did two fundamental things: she showed up at the emergency room and told everything. She arrived in the morning, with a swollen eye and several bruises, not only on her face. She didn’t invent that she fell down the stairs or hit a closet door. No. Despite the shame and embarrassment, she told the truth. To the doctors’ questions she immediately responded with her own story: “My husband beat me.” Evidently the pain was stronger than the reticence in the face of family problems that many often prefer to keep hidden. Preferring to suffer in silence, a bit of foundation, glasses and scarf and off we go, as if nothing had happened. So that people don’t talk or, more simply, to avoid further retaliation from the violent roommate.

But no, the 56-year-old spoke immediately, telling how she had suffered those injuries and above all whose hands were pressed against her face.
The doctors in the emergency room of the Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital rescued and treated her for those violent beatings and she came out of that glass door with a prognosis of 30 days. Because those blows to her face caused trauma to her right orbit with corneal abrasion. Quite serious injuries, with the fear of having even more serious consequences to the sight. It will be clear in a month how the wounds sustained in the man’s attack progress. To defend herself from which she found a cordon of relatives who love her, who held her close and convinced her not to remain silent. What happened to her is too disturbing, what her husband did to her is too serious. In fact, according to what we learn, what accompanied her to the hospital was the embrace of her family, who in addition to her practical help, gave her the courage to report. She too reported herself to the police to tell everything in black and white. But her important help was also knowing that she had a safe haven once outside the hospital’s Gambuli car park. It is impossible to think of a return to the marital home: she was able to choose but the safety of the walls of a relative’s apartment. From where to try to heal the wounds to her soul, before those to her face.
