Reggio Calabria is the provincial capital of Calabria which, in 2023, collected the greatest proceeds from fines and sanctions against private individuals for violations of the Highway Code; the data emerges from the analysis carried out by Facile.it on the data of Siope*, the information system of the operations of public bodies, which also highlighted how the municipalities have collected more than 2.7 million euros.
In total, in 2023, the Calabrian capital municipalities collected over 4 million euros.

The Calabrian ranking by income…
If, as mentioned, Reggio Calabria occupies first place in the ranking, Catanzaro (over 730 thousand) and Crotone (almost 390 thousand) are in second and third place on the podium.
The municipality of Cosenza closes the Calabrian ranking, with over 208,000 euros raised from fines for violating the Highway Code.

…and in per capita amounts
Facile.it has also calculated the value of “per capita fine” (as the ratio between the revenues recorded in Siope and the number of resident inhabitants) although, it should be specified that not all fines are inflicted on resident motorists and, indeed, in some tourist and commuter areas contribute significantly to the overall figure.
The analysis shows that also in this case the ranking remains unchanged: in first place is Reggio Calabria, with a per capita fine of 16 euros. Followed – at a short distance between them – Catanzaro (9 euros) and Crotone (7 euros). Once again, the municipality of Cosenza closes the ranking, with a per capita fine of just 3 euros.

Small municipalities
Limiting the analysis to Calabrian municipalities with less than 2,000 residents, two municipalities in the province of Cosenza are in first place: Tarsia which, with just over 1,800 inhabitants, grossed almost 450 thousand euros in 2023, and Roseto Capo Spulico, which with 1,887 inhabitants has collected more than 380,000 euros in fines.

* The analysis was carried out by Facile.it on Siope data, the information system of the operations of public bodies, updated to 15 February 2024 with reference to the item “proceeds from fines and sanctions for violations of the rules of the highway code against families” relating to the year 2023 and to Italian municipalities only. The per capita value was calculated by comparing the revenues of each Municipality with the number of inhabitants resident on 1 January 2023 (source: Istat).
