FANO – «Sorry, I’m in a lot of pain, can I have a Tachipirina?». “No, we don’t have it.” «Nurse, my child is cold there on the stretcher, can I have a blanket?». «No, we don’t have blankets. The company doesn’t pass them on.”

The situation

Rita Fusco, a lady who accompanied her husband to the emergency room of the Santa Croce hospital on the night of May 3rd, was shocked by the environmental situation encountered. This time it is not about the long hours of waiting, which still persist, justified, as everyone knows by now, by the need to ensure priority for those in more critical conditions, who are guaranteed the right to access treatment before the one who has been waiting to be visited the longest. «From the floor of the waiting room, crowded with resigned patients, patched up with a collage of pieces of linoleum, cardboard and shreds of plastic stuck to each other with adhesive tape. Here – he found – nervousness is sky high. Two armed guards roam among the patients ready to quell emergency situations. A lady raises her voice anyway and the police are called, who intervene shortly afterwards and ask everyone to be patient. A couple of parents arrive with a very small child. As soon as they realize where they have ended up, they leave furiously to look for help elsewhere. An elderly lady tries to go to the bathroom but the dirt in front of her forces her back to sit in the waiting room. Despite the impeccable commitment of the staff and doctors, who do everything possible to meet the needs of the users, this emergency room appears completely inadequate to the respect that, in a normal country, would be due not only, first of all, to patients in difficult conditions and in a state of need, but to any citizen who deserves healthcare facilities very different from this one”. As mentioned above, no one is moved to healthcare services which, as far as the quality aspect is concerned, are not questioned, what is contested is the environmental aspect which in a sector like this should be more welcoming and qualified. Having said this, the lady appeals to politicians, in particular to the Region on which healthcare depends, but also to all the candidates in the next local elections to commit themselves to making a very delicate service more welcoming, because it can be accessed in a moment of physical and emotional fragility and of great usefulness.

The wait

It is true that the Region has announced the construction of a new building for emergencies and emergencies, but we cannot wait for the completion of the work, given that the works have yet to begin, leaving the current emergency room situation unchanged.
