The construction of the new canteens in the courtyards of the Leopardi, Rodari, Giovanni XXIII and Buon Pastore primary schools, financed with Pnrr resources (as well as that of the Sant’Agnese school) responds to the need of the schools themselves to recover the spaces inside the buildings which are currently used as school canteens.

All the projects were shared with the school directors from the beginning and include the construction in the courtyard area of the Rodari primary school of a 375 square meter building and structures of the same size serving the Rodari and Buon Pastore schools, while the canteen of the Giovanni XXIII primary school will measure 275 square meters. The construction of the new buildings required the felling of nine trees in the courtyard of the Leopardi school and another nine in the courtyard of the Rodari school. The construction sites of the other two schools, however, do not interfere in any way with the green area. The removed trees will be replanted one by one, as required by the municipal green regulations.

This was explained by the Councilor for Public Works Andrea Bosi who, in the council meeting on Monday 15 April, responded to the question presented by the Green Europe-Greens group which asked whether the Leopardi school project had required the complete cancellation of the green area of the school, whether further removals were planned on the construction sites of other schools and whether the schools were informed about the project.

In response to the question on how the practice implemented was reconciled in particular with the principle of not causing significant damage to the environmental objectives (Dnsh, Do no significant harm) envisaged by the European Union, it was specified that the new building under construction in Leopardi, with wooden load-bearing structures, large windows and French windows and LED lighting, it will be an almost completely passive building that will not require the use of fossil fuels and which will, on the contrary, be powered by renewable energy sources.

After requesting the transformation into an interpellation, the 5 Star Movement underlined that we often find ourselves, after events, faced with citizens’ discomfort, even if cutting down trees is not a taboo. But the school of the future uses the gardens as open-air classrooms and perhaps, with a greater effort from everyone, a different project could have been thought of.

For Lega Modena, the end of the council is characterized by an “environmental havoc”. According to the group, different choices could have been made, also by providing better information: even if the school knew, in fact, many parents did not.

Fratelli d’Italia stated that, if the canteen is necessary, it is right to build it but asked if the expansion was really useful given that the meals arrive ready.

In response, the Green Europe group argued that in this case what is central has been confused with what is peripheral: the quality of the food served to schoolchildren is central and not the place, and the conservation of the existing greenery is central. and do not replant, even if it is foreseen by the Green Regulations which in this case should be changed.
