Salerno, polluted sea: bathing ban on two stretches of coast

Poor quality of bathing water, a ban on swimming is triggered in two stretches of coast in Salerno. Mayor Vincenzo Napoli signed the ordinance banning bathing in the stretch near the mouth of the Irno river and in the area between the Fuorni and Picentino streams.

The classification of the quality of bathing water is processed by ARPAC through statistical calculation of the analytical data of the last four years of monitoring and the Region has identified the waters intended for bathing use and the related monitoring points for the next bathing season.

The waters found to be of poor quality appear to be present along the stretch of coast called “East Irno River” and along the “Free beach between Fuorni and Picentino” stretch. The waters not used for bathing and permanently prohibited are all the remaining stretches of coast not included in bathing waters, such as the mouths of rivers or canals that cannot be remedied, collectors, port areas, protected marine areas and military easements, i.e. the mouths of Fuorni river, Irno, Picentino, the Port of Salerno and the Marina di Arechi Port.

The temporarily prohibited sea areas can be used again for bathing following the first favorable analytical outcome, provided that the measures adopted to prevent, reduce or eliminate the causes of pollution have been documented to the Region by the competent authorities.
