“Tourism is crucial for growth in Perugia”

Scoccia Points Out: “Tourism Is Crucial for the Growth of Perugia”

Annoys Punctuate – Margherita Scoccia, mayoral candidate for the centre-right and civic, during a recent meeting with the Confcommercio of Perugia, highlighted the vital role that tourism plays in the local economy. The initiative focused on supporting businesses in the tourism sector, sustainable urban development, mobility and digitalisation as pillars of a strategy aimed at strengthening and expanding this important industry for the city.

Scoccia expressed strong support for tourism, identifying it as a strategic lever for income and employment in Perugia. “Tourism not only generates work and wealth but also stimulates all sectors of the local economy, from agriculture to industry, through crafts and social associations,” said Scoccia. According to the candidate, the Municipality plays a crucial role in the development of tourism, with the ability to significantly influence through urban planning, transport, parking and access to services such as broadband.

During his speech, Scoccia also provided some data that highlights the growth of tourism in Perugia, with daily visitors reaching 3,200 and a 25% increase in foreign tourists who spend on average over 65 euros per day. These numbers indicate a positive trend that the candidate intends to further strengthen, especially in view of the 2025 Jubilee, with plans to improve connections with nearby locations such as Assisi.

On the tourist tax front, Scoccia announced his intention to work closely with operators in the sector to ensure that these funds are used in a way that encourages the growth of tourism, improving mobility and communication services and increasing the accessibility for tourists. He also spoke of the need to break down architectural barriers and improve Perugia’s tourist infrastructure, such as public bathrooms and refreshment areas.

Finally, Scoccia committed to reviewing the tax burden on tourism professions and activities, with particular attention to structures that do not operate all year round. He underlined the importance of balancing such taxes with the actual employment rate and of combating illegal practices and unfair competition, thus strengthening a fair market environment for honest entrepreneurs. These steps are seen as essential to ensure long-lasting and inclusive prosperity for all actors in Perugia’s tourism sector.
