In 1982, Wim Wenders asked 16 of his colleagues to talk about the future of cinema, giving life to the film Room 666. 40 years later, 30 directors answered the same questions and it was born Room 999 which will be scheduled at the cinema La Compagnia di Firenze from 8 to 14 May.
In this documentary, Room 999, director Lubna Playoust interviews a new generation of directors asking them to reflect on a specific question: Is cinema a language on the verge of being lost, an art on the verge of dying?. The aim of the film is a message of hope: Room 999through the point of view of professionals from the world of cinema, tries to convey that message to future generations instead of repeating, once again, that the world is dying.
The filming of Room 999 were carried out during the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, and the film was presented at the Festival the following year. Exactly as the young Wenders had done in 1982, Lubna Playoust reconstructs the same situation, having various directors sit alone in front of a camera, in a hotel room on the Croisette. A very simple and intimate set which allows the interviewees to open up directly and without filters. Wenders included!
“Because you titled the film Room 999?” “How could I have found a better title than Wim Wenders? The devil’s room! 999 is obviously the inverse of 666. But in numerology it has a strong symbolic meaning. It marks the end of a cycle and the start of a new beginning. It seemed like the perfect reflection of today’s world.” Lubna Playoust.
