The dispute between the Municipality of Palermo and theAti Pet’s Boarding and Dog’s House in Caserta which in recent years has hosted dogs from the municipal kennel of the Sicilian capital. Due to overcrowding in the municipal facility, in 2017, the procedure for outsourcing the animal care service was started. The sum of 468 thousand euros had been allocated. The service began in 2019. So far, 288 dogs have been transferred to Caserta.
Progressively, the animals had to be handed over to the ATI which favored their adoption. But a dispute had arisen. The Municipality believed that there had been defects in the management of the reception and had applied a penalty. ATI had contested delays in payments. Now an agreement has been found. The Municipality will pay 407 thousand euros and the Ati will guard the animals for another year. Upon expiry, the animals that have not been put up for adoption will return to Palermo or remain in the joint venture with the payment of a fee by the Municipality. “The settlement agreement with the ATI of Caserta for the hospitalization of 150 dogs from Palermo was drawn up in the paramount interest of safeguarding the well-being of our animals. This is an important transaction that leads to a solution pending the transfer to Palermo. It is also important to underline how the Municipality has undertaken not to sell the ownership of the dogs at the Caserta facilities in order to guarantee their care and adoption policies”say the mayor Roberto Lagalla and the councilor for animal welfare Fabrizio Ferrandelli.
